Harm Reduction

Here at Living in Balance recovery services, harm reduction is a public health approach to substance use disorder (SUD) treatment that focuses on minimizing the negative consequences associated with drug use rather than solely emphasizing abstinence. This strategy recognizes that while some individuals may not be ready or able to stop using substances, they can still take steps to reduce the health risks and social harms linked to their use. Harm reduction practices include measures like needle exchange programs, supervised injection sites, distribution of naloxone to prevent opioid overdose, and providing access to clean syringes. These interventions aim to improve the overall health and well-being of individuals with SUD, reduce the spread of infectious diseases like HIV and hepatitis, and offer pathways to treatment and recovery by engaging people where they are in their substance use journey. Harm reduction is grounded in compassion, respecting individual autonomy while promoting public health.
